Why salt from ZoutPlus is essential for your water softener
And why cheap or incorrect salt can damage your system
A water softener works only as well as the salt you use.
Many people underestimate this. They invest thousands of euros in a water softener, but then save on the salt.
That is a mistake.
Good water softening salt is not just any salt.
It determines:
- the efficiency of your water softener
- the salt consumption
- the lifespan of your device
- the quality of your water
At ZoutPlus, we exclusively supply high-quality water softening salt that is suitable for all water softeners in Belgium.

How does a water softener actually work?
A water softener removes limescale from water through ion exchange.
This process occurs in the resin of the softener:
- Hard water flows through a resin bed.
- Calcium and magnesium (lime) are retained by the resin.
- These are replaced by sodium ions from salt.
Thus, the water becomes soft and limescale problems disappear.
When the resin becomes saturated, it is regenerated with brine (salt solution) so that it can remove lime again.
In summary:
A classic water softener does not work without salt.
Why good water softening salt is so important
The quality of the salt determines how efficiently the regeneration of the resin occurs.
Poor or impure salt can:
- leave sludge or residue in the resin
- valves and fittings become contaminated
- to increase salt consumption
- cause disruptions
- shorten the lifespan of the softener
This is also the reason why manufacturers of water softeners always specifically recommend softening salt.
Why cheap salt often turns out to be more expensive
Many people buy the cheapest salt they can find.
But that can lead to:
More maintenance
Impure salt can cause deposits in the softener.
Higher salt consumption
Less pure salt dissolves worse.
Shorter lifespan of the device
Valves and resin become contaminated more quickly.
A water softener often costs between €1,500 and €3,000.
Then saving on salt is simply not wise.
Do water softeners work without salt?
We regularly hear about:
- magnetic systems
- electronic systems
- CO₂ systems
- “salt-free softeners”
Important to know:
These systems do not remove the lime from the water.
A true water softener removes calcium and magnesium through ion exchange.
Salt-free systems usually only try to influence the crystallisation of lime, but:
- the lime remains in the water
- the water hardness remains the same
- limescale can still occur
Therefore, classic salt-based water softeners remain the standard technology worldwide.
Which salt is best to choose?
Not every salt is suitable for a water softener.
The most commonly used types are:
Salt tablets
- most used
- pure
- ideal for modern softeners
Salt Blocks
- especially for certain brands
- very compact
Vacuum salt
- highest purity
- minimal residue

How much salt does a water softener use?
On average, a household consumes:

This depends on:
- water hardness
- type of hardener
- number of people
- water consumption
In regions with hard water (such as Flanders and Brussels), consumption is usually higher.
